Welcome to The Spill, where I ask industry experts or my favorite Instagrammers to spill their secrets on beauty, lifestyle, health, career and more. For the first feature, I asked @GelCream, an instagram handle and blog I have been following for quite some time. What I like and admire about her is her honest feedback and reviews on various beauty products. Also, she has aesthetically pleasing photos and there is an exact way she takes it featuring her hand and the product she is talking about. Why did you start your Instagram account?
I started Gelcream when I moved to the US. I was so overwhelmed by the amount of beauty products and brands and decided to start a magazine to document my journey in finding the best for myself.
Do you have a background in makeup?
I don’t have a background in beauty or makeup, but I worked in media my whole life – first at AnOther Magazine in London and after I was a fashion editor at Vogue Russia. That experience has helped me a lot.
Why was it important for you to be ad-free?
I want to be completely transparent and unbiased in my reviews. After working in magazines that live on ads its important for me to have all the freedom. Also, I respect my audience!
How do you find new products?
I discovered a lot of small but awesome brands by running polls on my Stories: I ask readers to share with me their favorite products (for example: concealer or blush) and I receive some really cool suggestions back. Of course I also google a lot!
What cosmetics/skincare brands are your personal favorites?
I like Aesop, respect Glossier, admire Kjaer Weiss, use Tata Harper and Chantecaille.
Do you have tips for anyone who wants to start a makeup/skincare Instagram/blog?
Find a unique and original point of view.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
To be honest I have no idea.
What are you currently obsessed with?
Natural deodorant is my favorite. Some have aluminum in them so on the less active days I try to use the natural ones and am loving the cream deodorants by Milk + Honey and Fi-ne. Also, Meow Meow Tweet is cool. Lately I like solid perfumes. I am into mixing lots of scents and I carry those little ones with me because they’re cute and smell great. And finally, blush! Blush is my favorite part of my make-up routine and I use both cream and powder at the same time.
